Position Summary
Remove, install, disassemble, repair, and test water meters in the shop and field using hoists, lifts, and various hand tools.  Install new water service taps.  Install AMR equipment on new and existing meters.


Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist journeymen in installing, maintaining and operating a wide variety of technical and complex appliances, equipment, and machines using a wide variety of tools and instruments related to a specific trade.
  • Perform a wide variety of bench or field work related to a specific trade.  Perform maintenance on tools, equipment, machinery, and instruments.
  • Read blueprints, schematics, graphs, or diagrams.  Keep records on equipment, material, time keeping, and payroll.
  • Receive meters for repair, testing, and repair.  Receive new meters and part deliveries and check deliveries for damage and accuracy/completeness of order.
  • Maintain inventory of repair parts for meters and AMR devices.  Keep shop records on meter activity and inventory.
  • Perform field tests, repair and analyze worn meters, and determine whether to replace or repair.
  • Perform shop tests of meters using various test benches in accordance with established procedures.
  • Use field, shop equipment, and specialized tools including water main tapping machines, hoists, lifts, pallet jacks, air-testing equipment, drills and drill presses, grinding and cleaning equipment.
  • Disassemble meters in the field or shop.  Clean, test, replace or repairs worn or defective parts, and reassembles for final test and installation.
  • Apply American Water Works Association and the department's meter specifications in repair activities.  Ensure that new and repaired meters meet these standards.
  • Train and instruct less-skilled employees.  Assist in the inspection and maintenance of shop and field equipment.
  • Tap different sizes and types of water mains.  Inspect and determine compliance of service line installed by builder with Engineering Standards.
  • Prepare daily activity reports, logs, and monthly data reports.  Enter completion data in handheld field computer.
  • Carry out the department's Safety program through job performance and attendance at scheduled safety meetings.  Comply with OSHA and Denver Water Safety standards dealing with open ditches, confined spaces, and general safety in shop and field functions.
  • Recommend changes in Engineering standards, operating rules, department and section policies and procedures.
  • Meter Testing, rebuilding of meters/hydrant meters, AWWA standards, and a thorough knowledge of meters. – Preferred
  • Perform related work as required.

Hiring Range: $28.13 - $31.89/hr.

Full Pay Range: $24.43 - $38.09/hr.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 3 years of related work experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities for the position.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • Distribution Certifications and Plumber License is preferred.
  • Must be able to possess and maintain a valid Class ‘R’ Colorado driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Skills & Competencies  

  • Hand and power tools. 
  • Specialized tools such as hoists, lifts, grinders, drills, tapping machines, and air quality detectors. 
  • Basic math.  
  • Customer service. 
  • Computers and applicable software skills. 
  • Troubleshooting. 
  • Organization and time management skills.  

 

An offer of employment may be contingent upon satisfactory results of a post-offer drug test and alcohol. Denver Water tests for the following: amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana (THC), opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP). A strength test may also be conducted due to the physical requirements of the position. This strength test may include lifting, pushing, and pulling various amounts of weight as well as crouching, squatting, and lifting one’s own body weight from various positions. If the position is deemed safety-sensitive or requires a CDL, you will be placed on the random drug and alcohol testing list, which means you may be tested if your name is selected while employed at Denver Water.
