Water Distribution Operator

St Charles Mesa Water District is seeking an experienced Water Distribution Operator to join our team and help provide high quality potable drinking water to our 4,400 customers from our 5 MGD Direct Filtration Treatment Facility, water tanks, and 206 miles of potable water distribution system piping. This position performs a variety of unskilled and skilled manual tasks in connection with the housekeeping, installation, maintenance and repair of the Districts’ pumping, water treatment, storage and water distribution system.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment including; utility and dump trucks, backhoes, motor graders, tampers, air compressors, pipe cutters, tapping machines, water pumps, torches, gasoline saws and fresh air ventilation machines. Responsible for the cleaning and general maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs water mains of various sizes and materials, meter sets, service lines, water valves and fire hydrants in accordance with District standards and specifications. Makes taps of various sizes on all types of water mains.  Assists in conducting water flow tests on fire hydrants.
  • Provides assistance in preparing the work site. Unloads truck and distribute materials, tools and equipment.  Sets up barricades and traffic control devices and directs traffic for smaller construction projects.  Repairs road and excavation sites as necessary.
  • Locates and operates valves and fire hydrants; ensures that air is properly removed from water mains and that valves are opened and closed properly to prevent damage to the distribution system.
  • Assists and performs maintenance duties and housekeeping chores on pump station facilities, structures, heating and plumbing systems, landscaping, ditches, piping and conduits.

 

  • Installs, repairs, rebuilds and maintains intake structures, under-ground and above-ground tanks, reservoirs and other storage facilities. Maintains grounds including landscaping, sprinkler systems and trees.
  • Performs related duties such as welding, sheet metal work, carpentry, painting, pipe fitting and cement work.
  • Responds to stand-by or emergency calls on a rotation basis with others in the department.
  • Operates assigned vehicle.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Employee provides technical guidance and training to other employees performing similar work duties (as assigned), but is not a direct supervisory position.

 

JOB QUALIFICIATIONS:

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Colorado Class “4” Water Distribution Operator certification and must successfully complete the continuing education courses required to maintain certification. Or ability to obtain Class “4” within 1 year of hire
  • Colorado Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and hazardous materials endorsement, or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
  • Four years related experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Moderate interpersonal skills are required to exchange and interpret information and respond to routine questions. Interacts with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, utility personnel and the public in person and/or by phone.
  • Must possess the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, including soldering equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans and base maps.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate vehicle/machinery such as backhoe, motor graders, utility and dump trucks and other construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of water distribution components and assembly, installation and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of welding, sheet metal, carpentry, painting and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and pipe fitting and installation.
  • Knowledge of construction and engineering standards.

 

Materials and Equipment Used:

 

  • A variety of tools and equipment for the installation, maintenance and repair of the raw water, treatment, storage and distribution systems.
  • Assigned vehicle.

 

Working Environment and Level of Physical Activity:

 

Work is performed in an outdoor and indoor environment.  Physical hazards are present over 75% of the time and may inhibit the normal performance of duties.  Position may be exposed to adverse weather conditions, confined spaces, noise and traffic hazards, chemical solvents or fumes, high-voltage areas and high places.  Ability to climb water tanks is desired (task is voluntary).  Work requires continuous standing, walking, bending, climbing, and/or kneeling.  Also requires excavating inside a five-foot trench or hole.  Lifting, pulling and/or pushing of items (often in excess of 40 pounds) is frequent and necessary for the performance of required duties.

Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, preemployment physical, and drug test prior to commencement of employment. St Charles Mesa Water District is beholden to Federal Motor Carrier requirements which include random drug testing. Compensation is competitive and dependent upon qualifications, with the district offering health insurance, retirement, 11 paid holidays, personal Time Off (PTO) and sick leave.  Starting salary is targeted between $29.00 to $35.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
