Water Treatment Operator

St Charles Mesa Water District is seeking an experienced Water Treatment Operator to join our team and help provide high quality potable drinking water to our 4,400 customers from our 5 MGD Direct Filtration Treatment Facility.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitors, adjusts and maintains water levels in reservoirs, filter beds and tanks.
  • Controls, calibrates, fills and regulates chemical machine feed rates using standard procedures and ratios.
  • Operates well pumps, emergency generators and other electrical and mechanical equipment related to water treatment.
  • Performs treatment-process equipment maintenance such as: re-building pumps, repairing filters and other related repairs.  Informs supervisor of needed maintenance for plant equipment.
  • Collects samples and performs required laboratory tests on raw, treated and finished water, including turbidity, pH, chlorine residual and jar tests as required or assigned by manager.
  • Updates and maintains operating and maintenance records for all work performed in the facility in accordance with state and federal regulations, including data on water and chemical flows, equipment maintenance and inventories.
  • Interacts with other operators and supervisors to provide status reports on facility operations to ensure continuity of water quality levels and compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Removes samples from filter media. Checks for effective size and uniformity co-efficient through visual inspections as well as chemical and sieve analysis.
  • Monitors supplies of chemicals and other required materials.
  • Performs building and grounds maintenance and general cleaning tasks.
  • Operates assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Responds to stand-by and emergency calls.
  • Other duties as designated

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Employee provides technical guidance and training to other employees performing similar work duties (as assigned).

 

JOB QUALIFICIATIONS:

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Colorado Class “A” Water Treatment Operator certification and must successfully complete the continuing education courses required to maintain certification. Or ability to obtain Class A within 1 year of hire
  • Colorado Class “A” Driver’s License with air brakes and hazardous materials endorsement, or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
  • Four years related experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate water-treatment computer system.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate telemetry and calibration instruments, hydraulic machinery and electric generator.
  • Excellent math and diagnostic skills to detect and evaluate critical situations.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, dump trucks, and forklifts.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Basic interpersonal skills required to exchange general information and interact informally with co-workers, supervisors and the public

 

Materials and Equipment Used:

 

  • Water-treatment chemicals, machinery, instrumentation, tools and equipment.
  • Assigned vehicle.

Working Environment and Level of Physical Activity:

 

Work is performed primarily in an indoor environment and occasionally in an outdoor environment.  Physical hazards are present approximately 75% of the time and may inhibit the normal performance of duties.  Position may be exposed to adverse weather conditions, confined spaces, noise and traffic hazards, and/or chemical solvents or fumes.  Ability to climb water tanks is desired (task is voluntary).  Work requires standing and/or walking for extended periods on a regular basis, lifting, pulling and/or pushing of items (sometimes in excess of 40 pounds) is frequent.

 

Other pertinent information:

Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, preemployment physical, and drug test prior to commencement of employment. St Charles Mesa Water District is beholden to Federal Motor Carrier requirements which include random drug testing. Compensation is competitive and dependent upon qualifications, with the district offering health insurance, retirement, 11 paid holidays, personal Time Off (PTO) and sick leave.  Starting salary is targeted between $29.00 to $35.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
